The leaves are changing color, the days are getting shorter, and you may be spending more time inside as temperatures drop.
If you're not taking steps to give your bedroom a seasonal makeover, you could be missing out on some quality sleep.
Here are some tips that will set you up for better sleep night after night:
Clear Away Dust Around the Bed Frame
If you didn't get a chance to do a deep cleaning of the bedroom during the busy summer months, the change of the season is a great time to start. Dust and pollen can build up on the bed frame and skirting boards, so take some extra time to clear away debris around these areas. Doing so can prevent pesky hay fever and other allergy symptoms that keep you up at night.
Let There Be Light
Dr. Robert Oexman, founder and CEO of Somly, says it's important to add bright light to help you wake up for the day. You might keep the curtains drawn or install very thick curtains during the colder months, but get into the habit of letting the light in upon waking. Natural light will help you get out of that bleary-eyed stupor on even the dreariest of fall days. If you have sun-blocking curtains, consider installing a timer to program the curtains or motorized blinds to let the light in right when you need it.
Turn Up the Heat
If you find yourself shivering as you fall asleep, it might be difficult to stay asleep through the night. Turn to flannel sheets instead of cotton to help trap in the heat. Make sure you have plenty of blankets and comforters at your disposal and wear nightclothes that keep you warm. The ideal sleep temperature varies from person to person so it might take some time for you to find yours. Sleep Number® has innovations like the DualTemp™ layer, which allows you to warm or cool each side of the bed to the temperature that's perfect for you.
Clean Blinds and Windows
Blinds and window ledges are other areas where dust mites and allergy-triggering substances hide. If these areas were neglected during the summer months, there's a good chance you are being exposed to allergens on a nightly basis. As less fresh air enters the room because you close up all the windows, those dust mites can end up circulating in the bedroom while you sleep and settling on the bedding. Make sure to clear away all traces of dust and disinfect the windows and blinds to keep these areas clean.
